Children are being offered the chance to learn about healthy eating and the joys of cooking this summer at a free children’s cookery school, sponsored by Milford Waterfront.

The programme is being run by nutritionist Ellen Picton from Healthaspire and is open to youngsters aged between 6-11 every Monday afternoon throughout the summer holidays, beginning on 24th July.

Fishing is an important part of Milford Haven’s culture and the town is home to Wales’ largest fishing port, therefore fish will be a key focus during the sessions. Participants will learn about the benefits to their health, get hands-on making a healthy fish lunch and take home what they’ve cooked to their families.

Lucy James, Marketing Manager at the Port of Milford Haven, commented “Lots of children pass the fish docks on a regular basis but not everyone makes the connection between what’s landed here and what’s on their dinner plate. The cookery school will educate participants on what they can cook with fish and introduce them to some tasty new dishes.”

Nutritionist and owner of Healthaspire, Ellen Picton, is looking forward to the classes. She said “It’s so important to teach children how to cook and understand where food comes from as it’s a vital skill that stays with you for life. Fish has so many health benefits and needs to form part of our diet on a weekly basis, so giving families new ideas will hopefully help with this.”

The cookery school takes place at Healthaspire every Monday between 2-4.30pm for six weeks at Temeraire House, booking is essential.
