When Van Dyk’s Salon first opened its doors 20 years ago, owner Jane simply hoped to make a living doing what she loved.

Two decades later, the salon has become a cherished part of the Milford Waterfront landscape, known for its friendly atmosphere, trusted service and the lifelong bonds formed in the stylist’s chair.

Van Dyk’s Salon is celebrating 20 years, what does reaching this milestone mean to you personally?

Honestly, it means the world to me. When I first opened the doors 20 years ago, I just hoped I could build something special and make a living doing what I love. I never imagined I’d still be here two decades later, surrounded by such loyal clients and an amazing team. It feels emotional, if I’m honest. Van Dyk’s isn’t just a business – it’s been such a huge part of my life.

Looking back over the past two decades, what are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the relationships we’ve built. We’ve seen clients through weddings, babies, career changes, big birthdays – and sometimes tough times too. We’ve watched children grow up and bring their own children in for their first haircuts. That loyalty and trust is something I never take for granted.

What has kept you passionate about hairdressing after so many years?

The people. Always the people. Hairdressing isn’t just about hair – it’s about confidence, conversation and connection. There’s nothing better than seeing someone sit a little taller in the chair once they’ve had their hair done. Trends change, techniques evolve, but that feeling never changes.

Van Dyk’s is the longest-running unisex salon at Milford Waterfront, what’s been key to that longevity?

We’ve always focused on doing the basics really well – quality hairdressing, honest advice and a warm welcome. We’ve adapted over the years, of course, but we’ve stayed true to who we are. I think clients appreciate consistency and knowing they’re in safe hands.

How important has the Milford Waterfront location been?

The Waterfront is our home – it always has been. We’ve grown alongside it. We’ve seen it evolve, welcome new businesses, new faces, new energy. There’s such a lovely community feel here. Clients often say they love coming down, enjoying the views and making a little outing of their appointment. It’s more than just a location to us – it’s part of our story.

You use brands such as A.S.P, OSMO, Color Wow, and OSiS - why is using quality products so important?

Because our clients deserve the best. Simple as that. When someone trusts you with their hair, you don’t cut corners. High-quality products mean better results, healthier hair and more confidence for our clients. We only use products we truly believe in.

Can you share a memorable moment that stands out from the past 20 years?

There are so many. But what really stands out is the generations. Seeing mums bring their daughters in, and now those daughters bringing their own children – that’s incredibly special. It makes you realise just how much time has passed and how lucky we are to still be part of people’s lives.

How has your team contributed to the salon’s success?

I couldn’t do this without Kirsten, Amy and Diane. They’re not just talented stylists – they’re kind, caring and genuinely lovely people. We laugh every day. We support each other. We care about our clients and about the salon. Having a team like that makes all the difference.

What do clients love most about their experience at Van Dyk’s?

They often say it feels friendly and relaxed – like catching up with friends. There’s no pressure, no rushing. Just good conversation, a cuppa and great hair at the end of it.

How do you keep the service personal?

We listen. Every appointment starts with a proper conversation. We talk about lifestyle, maintenance, what they’re comfortable with. It’s never one-size-fits-all. That personal touch is everything to us.

What hair trends have you loved over the years, and which ones are you glad stayed in the past?

I’ve loved seeing softer, more natural colours come back into fashion. As for trends I’m glad stayed in the past… let’s just say some of the early 2000s looks were brave! But that’s the fun of fashion – it keeps us on our toes.

Why are your gift vouchers so popular?

Because they’re a little bit of “me time”. In today’s world, that’s such a thoughtful gift. It’s not just a haircut – it’s an hour to relax, chat and feel looked after.

What would you like to say to clients who have supported Van Dyk’s for the past 20 years?

From the bottom of my heart – thank you. Your loyalty, your friendships and your support have made these 20 years possible. We truly wouldn’t be here without you. Here’s to many more years at our home on Milford Waterfront.
