Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock are fascinating places for visitors with a keen interest in our local history. And, this month, heritage attractions from both sides of the Haven have come together to create a ‘Discover the Haven’ week of events from 27th May to 2nd June which celebrate our rich heritage and bring our history to life once again.

The volunteers at Milford Haven Museum will be holding a series of special evening Lamplight Tours on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th May at 7.00pm and 8.00pm. Prepare to be guided around the award-winning museum by lamplight to enjoy a new perspective on our town’s story.

A ‘Model Soldiers D-Day Diorama Display’ will on display at Corner House, Milford Haven Museum, from 10.00am to 4.00pm on 27th, 28th and 31st May, depicting the infamous landings in Normandy 1944. This display is created by Andy Williams, and recognises one of the biggest invasions in history.

On Friday 31st May at 7.00pm, history enthusiasts will be able to enjoy a swashbuckling Pembrokeshire Pirates Talk by local author and historian Mark Muller at Milford Haven Museum, which will include stories of Sir John Perrott and Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart). This event is sponsored by Barti Ddu Rum and guests over the age of 18 will be invited to sample a tot of rum whilst they enjoy the fascinating talk.

And, after being made famous by its namesake, the Lord Nelson Hotel will also be involved in activities in Milford Haven, playing host to the U Boat Project Exhibition from Wednesday 29th to Friday 31st May – the exhibition will be open from 10.00am to 6.00pm each day.

On the south side of the Haven, there are daily displays and workshops from Monday 27th May to Sunday 2nd June at West Wales Maritime Heritage Society Museum and the week will start with a family fun day on Monday, including a vintage car display, coracle racing and much more!

There will also be heritage talks from historians at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre on ‘Fortifications of the Haven Waterway’, ‘Royal Navy Ships built at Neyland in the Eighteenth Century’ and ‘HMS Warrior 1905’ which will take place on 27th, 28th and 29th May, respectively. In addition to this, CADW’s ‘Fleet Surgeon’ talks and demonstrations will take place on 29th & 30th May from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

During this fantastic week, if you’d like to explore the historic Milford Haven Waterway by water, Discover Coast and Cleddau Boat Trips will offering Wildlife Boat Trips at 11.00am each day. Please call 01646 696370 to book.
